A formal prize giving ceremony of the environmental deeds of the year came to an end a while ago in the Ministry of the Environment, where the Minister of the Environment Mr Villu Reiljan distributed prizes in the total amount of 80 000 kroons.

Prizes were distributed in two categories: “Environmental Deed of the Year 2005” and “Little Environmental Deed of the Year 2005”. Jaan Riis won the grand prize of 30 000 kroons for organising the Nature Omnibus and great evenings dedicated to nature. Riina Kallas received the second prize of 15 000 kroons for establishing the Tartu Reuse Centre.

In addition, three equal prizes of 5 000 kroons were distributed. These prizes were awarded to:

* The NPO Nature Education Association Fenolo for creating an interactive nature calendar (www.looduskalender.ee)

* The NPO Timur for the project “Clean the forest 2005”;

* The Hiiu Consumer Association for launching an inventive packaging deposit system in 2005.

The nominees for the category of the little environmental deed were all equal and worthy of equivalent acknowledgement. The prizes (each 5 000 kroons) of the little environmental deed were distributed to:

* The Torma kindergarten “Linnutaja” for versatile activities in the field of environmental education;

* The Tartu Hiie School for participating in and conducting environmental projects;

* The Kopli Centre of the Tallinn Children’s Home for taking part in the cleaning campaign in the surroundings of the Männiku quarry;

* The NPO Hared for the project “Garden windmill”, i.e. for the development of an environmental education programme.

In addition, the panel decided to award two special prizes:

* The PLC Eesti Statoil received a special prize for launching an excellent deposit system (all petrol stations of Statoil accept packaging on which a deposit has been established – this is exceptional in comparison with other small points of sale, and therefore deserves acknowledgment).

* The NPO Ökokratt received a special prize for the popularisation of the environmental field (a good example of how it is possible to turn matters related to the environment hip and popular among young people, and hence, attract the attention of the general public).
