The Minister of the Environment Mr Villu Reiljan and the Director of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) Mr Dominique Marbouty are going to sign a cooperation agreement between Estonia and the ECMWF at 15:00 on Monday, 7 November. The ECMWF is an independent international organisation collaborating with 27 European countries at this time. The computer systems of the member states are linked by high-speed telecommunication lines to the super-computer complex situated in the headquarters of the ECMWF in Reading, Great Britain. The Centre's computer system contains the world’s biggest archive of numerical weather prediction data and controls the world's most sophisticated medium-range prediction model of the global atmosphere and oceans. The ECMWF, the best in the world in its field, provides the weather services with medium-range forecasts to ten days ahead of the global weather and ocean waves, and seasonal forecasts to six months ahead. On the basis of the data obtained from the Centre, the Estonian Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (EMHI) develops its own HIRLAM model in cooperation with the University of Tartu and the Finnish Meteorological Institute. This model enables to predict substantially more precisely the weather in different regions of Estonia. These results are already available at www.emhi.ee, the homepage of the EMHI. In addition, it is possible to extend more accurate forecasts to six to ten days ahead, which is very important from the economic perspective in planning work. The festive signing of the cooperation agreement is going to take place in the Ministry of the Environment (7a Narva Road). Besides the Minister and the Director of the ECMWF, the Director General of the EMHI Mr Jaan Saar and other employees of the Institute are going to attend the event.
