Estonia will Accede to the Convention on Nuclear Safety
|
|
Today, on 8
September the Government of the Republic approved a draft Act
providing that Estonia will accede to the Convention on Nuclear
Safety. The aim of the Convention is to ensure the safety of nuclear
installations and protect people from the danger arising from nuclear
installations.
Although there are no nuclear installations in
the territory of Estonia within the meaning of this Convention, we
have to be prepared for possible incidents in the nuclear plants of
our neighbouring countries such as Finland (Loviisa), Russia
(Sosnovyi Bor) and Lithuania (Ignalina) and make and test our plans
of action in the case of radiological emergencies. In order to
protect people and the environment, it is important to acknowledge
the principles of ensuring nuclear safety.
Accession to the
Convention will enable Estonia to have a say in shaping the nuclear
safety policy. In addition to this, we will get a better overview and
obtain more accurate information about the safety of nuclear
installations in the territories of other parties to the Convention
and get a chance to ask questions and demand explanations.
By
31 March 2005, 65 countries had signed the Convention. 55 countries
and the European Atomic Energy Community have ratified, approved or
acceded to the Convention.
