Swedish experience to promote environmental awareness in Estonia
|
|
Tomorrow, on 30 March a joint seminar of the Swedish Embassy, the Estonian Ministry of the Environment and the Swedish Export Council will be held where Swedish experts will share their experience of spreading environmental information and raising general awareness in the field of nature protection and sustainable development.
Guests invited to participate in the lunch seminar at the Swedish Embassy in Tallinn include representatives of government agencies, non-governmental organisations, periodicals and standing committees of the Riigikogu – people who have the power to influence decision-making on environmental issues.
Sweden has dozens of years of valuable environmental experience to share, both positive and negative. Learning from Swedish experience will hopefully help us avoid some of their mistakes and, on the other hand, save time on “inventing the bicycle”.
The topics to be discussed at the seminar include, for example, the need to make long-term plans for work in the field of environmental education and focus on preschool and general education. In education, which most directly concerns a large part of the society, the precondition for successful implementation of decisions is involving the entire society on decision-making by way of public debates. The manner of determining the objectives and needs has to be chosen based on the abilities and possibilities of the target group.
In addition, the issues related to efficient spreading of environmental information, long-term planning of activities and quick campaigns will be discussed. Since the importance of environmental issues is growing also in terms of strategic planning in companies, the use of environmental arguments in corporate communication strategy will also be tackled.
The precondition for leaving a rich and high-quality environment to next generations is cooperation between various groups of the society such as government agencies, companies, non-governmental organisations and the media. It is not easy, but it is a must. Every member of the society has to feel the responsibility.
The seminar is the first attempt at sharing Swedish environmental experience in Estonia, but both parties are ready to continue cooperating, if need be.
The moderator of the seminar is Mr Olavi Tammemäe, Assistant Minister of the Ministry of the Environment.
