Interim Results of the Nature Conservation Development Plan Introduced at a Forum
|
|
On 9 February, the Second Forum on the Sectoral Nature Conservation Development Plan will be held in Saku manor house where the interim results of the activities of working groups preparing the development plan will be introduced to the public. At this forum both joint discussions and group discussions will be held. The following subjects will be addressed: landscape conservation and protection of biotic communities, protection of species, social and economic effects, education in nature and nature awareness.
The overall objective of the nature conservation development plan is to prepare a rational, explicated, purposeful sectoral nature conservation development plan that would meet the needs of all parties interested in this subject. The development plan should contain general guidelines for the next 35 years and create conditions for comprehensive development of nature conservation and related fields.
In order to achieve the overall objective, the following detailed goals have been set:
-
To present a uniform vision of development directions in improving nature conservation work;
-
To determine nature conservation development priorities and fields of activity for achieving both short and long term goals;
-
To direct the activity of the institutions related to nature conservation and set targets for these institutions.
The nature conservation development plan should be sufficiently objective and rational so that it could be used as a basis for making operational activity plans for shorter periods (in line with the periods of the Environmental Action Plan) and for assessing the nature conservation needs in other national plans/strategies.
The Ministry of the Environment initiated preparing the sectoral nature conservation development plan in May 2004. This nature conservation development plan is the first plan of that kind in Estonia. The development plan is prepared on the basis of the strategy “Sustainable Estonia 21” and the renewed Environmental Strategy, being the sectoral development of the latter in the field of nature conservation.
At the opening forum of the development plan, which was held on 18 May 2004, the bases for preparing the development plan – the underlying principles, organisation of work and schedule – were introduced to the public. After the end of the opening forum, work continued in the so-called first round working groups. At the Second Forum on the Nature Conservation Development Plan that will be held on Wednesday, interim results, activities and developments will be introduced.
The programme of the forum can be found on the homepage of the Ministry of the Environment.
