Today, on 16 November a cooperation protocol between Estonia and Wallonia is signed for the years 2005 to 2007. The environmental priorities of the protocol include waste and water policy, sustainable development policy, Natura 2000 and nature protection in its wider sense.
The aim of the cooperation protocol is to share experience concerning the above-mentioned areas of the environment as well as cultural and educational issues, the economy, regional development, etc. So, for instance, the Wallonians intend to instruct Estonian specialists in implementing environmental projects more efficiently.
With regard to waste handling, Estonians hope to benefit from the Wallonian experience of how to apply the principles of producer’s liability to electrical and electronic waste and end-of-life vehicles. In relation to sustainable consumption and production, Wallonians have promised to share their experience mainly in the field of promoting environmentally sustainable public procurements or the so-called green public procurements. In addition to this, Estonians are eager to obtain information about nature protection and, most of all, Natura 2000.
At the signing of the cooperation protocol, the Wallonian delegation will be lead by Mr Charles-Etienne Lagasse, representative of the International Relations Commissariat of Wallonians who form the Belgian French community. The Estonian dele gation will be lead by Mr Paul Elberg, Adviser of the Foreign Economic Policy Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Besides him, the Estonian delegation will include representatives of the Ministry of the Environment, the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Education and Research, the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications and the Association of Estonian Cities.
