Today, on 27 October at 15:00 Mati Kose’s photo exhibition "Estonian Birds in the European Union" is opened in the atrium of the Ministry of the Environment (at Toompuiestee 24) to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the European Union Birds Directive.
According to the author Mati Kose, member of the Estonian Ornithological Society, the exhibition was held as a result of a number of coincidences: “I happened to have a good selection of photos from the past two years and the 25th anniversary of the Birds Directive was approaching. Hence the idea: why not celebrate the anniversary by an exhibition of photos which actually illustrate the species of Annex I to the Birds Directive.“ Such birds are, for example, the black stork, white stork, lesser spotted eagle, golden eagle, etc.
The objectives of implementing the European Union Birds Directive are the following:
* To protect all species of wild birds in the territory of the EU;
* To ensure sufficient protection of bird habitats and, in particular, the protection of endangered species and/or migratory birds;
* To prevent the destruction and pollution of habitats and substantial disturbance of birds in protected areas;
* To prohibit the use of all methods of large-scale or non-selective capture or hunting of birds;
* To establish control over the hunting of birds;
* To limit the use of birds for commercial purposes.
Mati Kose has had three personal exhibitions of which the last one, a collection of nature photos was displayed three years ago at the Tartu University Library. More frequently, Kose’s photos have been represented in various photography competitions. The author of today’s exhibition took his first shots at the end of the 1980s, but more seriously he engaged in photography in 1995.
The exhibition "Estonian Birds in the European Union" was supported by the European Union in cooperation with the Phare twinning project Natura 2000, the Nature Conservation Department of the Ministry of the Environment and the Estonian Ornithological Society.
