Scientific Conference on Meteorology Begins in Paldiski

On Thursday and Friday nearly 100 Estonian and Norwegian meteorologists and geographers hold a climatology symposium to celebrate the 200th birth anniversary of the legendary Estonian meteorologist and enthusiast Carl Kalk.

The conference begins by unveiling the memorial of Carl Kalk in the garden of the Nikolai Church in Paldiski today at 16:30 and making a tour on the Pakri peninsula. The presentations of the scientific conference will be given on Friday starting at 11:00 in the History Museum of the University of Tartu. The topics of the conference will include the development of natural sciences and meteorology and the activities of Carl Kalk. Doctor Nordli from Norway will appear as a guest presenter who will speak about the Norwegian climate during the past 250 years.

Carl Kalk was one of the most remarkable Estonians who has studied and analysed weather conditions. As the correspondent of the Saint Petersburg Main Observatory of Geophysics, Kalk carried out systematic meteorological observation in the course of 50 consecutive years (1835-1885).

The scientific conference on the occasion of the 200th birth anniversary of Carl Kalk is organised by the Estonian Meteorological and Hydrological Institute of the Ministry of the Environment, the Institute of Geography of the University of Tartu, the Estonian Geographical Society and the Tallinn Botanic Garden.
