The Nordic Hydrological Conference will be held in Estonia

Today (Aug. 9) was the first day of the XXIII Nordic Hydrological Conference. The conference takes place in the premises of Tallinn Technical University and lasts for four days. There are over a hundred participants, including Latvia, Lithuania, Byelorussia and Russia.
The conference emphasises the importance of surface water as a natural resource, and discusses measures for preservation and sustainable use of surface water. Issues will cover scientific and practical issues that are of interest both for scientists and water consumers. In addition to theoretical seminars and meetings, the conference participants will also visit several water facilities (e.g. those managed by AS Tallinna Vesi and Eesti Energia AS).
“The fact that this year the conference takes place in Estonia is particularly topical under the circumstances where our changing weather causes alternating years of draught and flood,” said Jaan Saar, the member of organising committee and the Director General of the Estonian Meteorological and Hydrological Institute.
The supporters of the Estonian conference include Nordic Association for Hydrology (NHF), the Ministry of Environment, Tallinn Technical University, UNESCO, etc. The Nordic Hydrology Conference takes place in every two years. Next time the hydrologists will meet in Denmark.
The organisation of the hydrological conferences has a long tradition in the Baltic Sea countries. The first conference took place in Riga in 1926, the second conference was held in Tallinn in 1928. Since 1994 the Baltic countries joined the Nordic Hydrological Association and participated the Nordic Hydrological Conference after a long break. Thus the organisation of the Nordic Hydrological Conference can be considered as return to the traditions of the first conferences.
