Today, on 2 June, Minister of the Environment Villu Reiljan and Rector of the Tallinn Pedagogical University Professor Mati Heidmets signed a cooperation agreement laying down long-term objectives for high-quality environmental research and education.

The cooperation agreement covers a wide scope of issues such as the training of environmental specialists and experts, practical training of students in the area of administration of the Ministry of the Environment, the cooperation of the University and the Ministry in choosing the topics and supervising the writing of Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral theses, and cooperation in initiating research and development projects and providing the necessary consultation.

Professor Mati Heidmets, Rector of the Tallinn Pedagogical University stressed the importance of spreading the attitude of environmental sustainability and awareness among young teac hers so that they would pass it on to the next generations. More than a half of Estonian teachers come from the Pedagogical University.

By signing the agreement, the Minister and the Rector wish to improve, develop and specify their long-term relations. The roots of the agreement lie in the necessity to carry out environmental research of even higher quality and the mutual wish to train environmental workforce according to today’s actual needs.

As the first step in the framework of the recently signed cooperation agreement, the parties will establish a working group that will meet as often as necessary but not less frequently than once a year. The working group will present their proposals and opinions on their cooperation and the need to change it to the managements of both parties on an annual basis.

The Ministry of the Environment has cooperated and hopes to continue cooperating with other universities as well.
