Rural municipalities surrounding Tallinn will get more groundwater consumption supply

Prindi

Ministry of the Environment starts negotiations with the rural municipalities surrounding Tallinn in order to recalculate the distribution of groundwater consumption supplies between the capital and the neighbouring rural municipalities.

At the moment there are valid groundwater consumption supplies (Kambrium-Vendi and Ordviitsium- Kambrium complexes) designated and sanctioned in Tallinn and Harju county in 1999 that are sanctioned till 2030. In connection with the shift of industry and habitation areas, a situation has arisen where groundwater consumption supplies located in the capital and adjoined rural municipalities do not meet the actual needs of water use.

In conjunction with the decrease of groundwater in Tallinn and the existence of surface water here, the position of the Ministry of the Environment is that groundwater consumption supply of the rural municipalities near the capital must be increased on account of Tallinn.

The initiative for increasing groundwater consumption supply must come from the rural municipality.
