At the 22nd Annual Meeting of the North-East Atlantic Fisheries Commission held in London, Estonia got a possiblity to catch 350 tons of redfish and 150 tons of mackerel. Also, Estonia can continue fishing deep-sea species - Greenland halibut, shark species, Rajiformes, tusk - with one vessel.
Estonia participated as an official member at the Annual Meeting of the North-East Atlantic Fisheries Commission for the first time. According to Mr. Ain Soome, Director General of the Fisheries Department of the Ministry of the Environment, so far Estonia had been a co-operating country with the organization, and could catch fish at North-East Atlantic under the co-operation quota.
“When catching on account of the co-operation quota, it is not certain how much a country can actually fish, because in addition to Estonia, Canada, Japan, Latvia and Lithuania were also allowed to catch in the frame of the quota. Now, Estonia has her own fixed quota,” said Mr. Soome.
This year, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Japan and Canada were able to catch 500 tons of redfish and 511 tons of mackerel in the frame of the co-operation quata.
One Estonian vessel has been catching fish at North-East Atlantic during last few years, more in earlier years. All long-distance fishing ships can show interest to catching fish in that fishing ground; there are eight such vessels in Estonia.
