|
|
This year’s allowable hunting limit of wolves – 16 animals, set by Ministry’s co-ordination panel of protection and management of great predators has been fulfilled and wolf hunting for this season is over.
Six wolves were shot in Järvamaa, four in Ida-Virumaa, and one in Põlva-, Tartu-, Harju-, Valga-, Viljandi and Võrumaa each.
Senior Officer of the Forestry Department of the Ministry of the Environment, mr. Peep Männil says that emission of additional hunting permissions is still possible in case applications will be well-grounded.
„When permanent snow cover has formed it will be possible to get more detailed overview of wolves’ this year’s breeding success and movement, after that it will be possible to plan our next activities“ mr. Männil explained.
Wolf hunting has been limited for two years, for because of unlimited hunting number of wolves has constantly decreased since 1996.
Great predators’ protection management plan considers optimal number of wolves in Estonia to be about 100-200 animals, however this spring’s observation data showed existence of only 60-80 animals prior to mating period.
