The quota of small herring has been divided with Latvia

As a result of fishing-negotiations that ended today, Estonia is permitted to catch up to 28,536 tons of small herring.
At the negotiations held in Pärnu it was decided that quota given by the International Baltic Sea Fishery Commission for the coming year will be shared equally between both countries.
Next year, Estonian fishing-ships may catch 18,130 tons of small herring from the Gulf of Riga, which is as about as much as this year and 10,406 tons from the open part of the Baltic Sea, which is 2,500 tons more than this year.
Additional quota of 28,000 tons granted for Latvia and Estonia was shared equally. According to Director General of Fisheries Department of Ministry of the Environment Ain Soome the resolution of the Commission permits Estonia and Latvia to catch an additional 5,000 tons from the open part of the Baltic Sea, which was also shared equally.
Latvia gave up 3,068 tons from the open part of the Baltic Sea for Estonia to catch. Estonia surrendered the same amount from the Gulf of Riga for Latvia.
In 2004., Latvia can catch the same amount of small herring from the Gulf of Livonia than this year, that is 21,130 tons and 2,704 tons from the open sea, which is 2,500 tons more than this year.
Soome said that the representatives of both countries stressed necessity to continue good mutual co-operation. „It will help us to defend our interests in EU in the future,“ Soome noted.
