Driven hunts force the moose to move

Prindi

On coming weekend, the first collective hunts will be held, which can force the moose to go on roads. The Ministry of the Environment advises those who plan going to forest to consider that.

According to Mr. Kaarel Roht, Senior Officer of Hunting, the intensity of the hunt is greater this year than in previous years. The number of moose has risen substantially over the past years, so it is allowed to hunt more moose than in previous years. According to the data of the spring count, there are 11 700 moose living in Estonia, the number of allowable kills is 4500.

The collective hunts are usually held on weekends when there are also more holidaymakers, berry-pickers and mushroomers in the woods.

“People in the forest should not be afraid when moose appear on the road, they should instead keep walking calmly. Drivers should also be more careful during the driven hunt period in October and November. Sometimes the hunting line could be located on roads also. Drivers should act understandingly when a hunter asks to stop the car and wait until the hunt is over”, said Mr. Roht.

The driven hunt can be recognized by the multitude of hunters who will be wearing red vests.

There are over 14000 hunters and 300 hunting areas in Estonia.
