Minister of the environment will visit the island of Hiiumaa

On June 14, Mr. Villu Reiljan, Minister of the Environment will visit the island of Hiiumaa. During the visit Mr. Reiljan will meet professional fishermen of the county, representatives of the Hiiumaa County Environmental Department and the Administration of Protected Areas in Hiiumaa, and participate in the graduation ceremony of the first graduates of environmental protection studies at the Suuremõisa Technical High School.

At the Suuremõisa Technical High School, the teaching of environmental protection was commenced two years ago and 15 graduates will receive their certificates tomorrow. The high school is among the first of its kind in Estonia where environmental protection related subjects are taught on the basis of a special curriculum. The graduates will have undergone studies with a wide approach that will enable them to work at local municipalities, county environmental departments, and to manage environmental projects.

At the meeting with the Administration of Protected Areas in Hiiumaa, the organisation of protection of the valuable habitats and communities in the Kõpu peninsula will be discussed. Mr. Reiljan also plans to visit the Kõpu peninsula.

At the meeting with professional fishermen of the county, the subjects for discussion will include possibilities for compensation of the damage caused by seals and the management plan of the Cormorant /Phalacrocorax carbo/.
