On June 12, Mr. Villu Reiljan, Minister of the Environment will lay the cornerstone of the Anne Water Purification Plant in Tartu.
The plant is planned to start operation in the end of 2003 and will provide high quality drinking water for nearly a half of the Tartu inhabitants. Today, excessive content of iron and H2S in the drinking water is posing problems to water consumers in the Annelinn and Ihaste area.
Minister Reiljan will also be shown the state of activities related to the construction of the tonnel collector K2. The tonnel collector, to be completed by the end of 2003 as well, will enable to channel the total volume of waste water in Tartu into the waste water treatment plant and, consequently, to considerably increase the water quality of the River Emajõgi and Lake Peipsi.
The Ministry of the Environment has provided support to the implementation of both projects and has applied for co-financing those activities from the European Union programmes. The construction of the tonnel collector is co-financed by the EU ISPA programme, the construction of the water purification plant by the PHARE programme.
The first stage of the tonnel collector K1 started operation in 1999.
