Customs and borderguard officers learn to identify radiation sources

On June 10-12, the Estonian Radiation Centre will organize a training for Estonian, Latvian, and Lithuanian customs and borderguard officers at Lepanina hotel (the Pärnu County) aiming to teach them in the use of radiation measurement equipment and identification of radiation sources in vehicles.

According to Ms. Elle Tanner, Specialist on Normatives of the Estonian Radiation Protection Centre, officers of customs and borderguard frequently need to search for radiation sources in vehicles where radioactive material having neither the required packaging nor required permits may occasionally be found.

According to Ms. Tanner, the frequency of such finds is relatively higher among scrap metal loads transported across the border.

"Customs and borderguard officers need to know how to use the measurement equipment as they need to determine whether the packaging meets relevant requirements and whether the vehicle might be radioactively polluted," said Ms. Tanner.

In case a radiation source is smuggled into the country and is not packaged according to relevant requirements, the customs officer will need to restrict access to such a radiation source and invite a radiation specialist.

The training course held on June 10-12 will be organized in cooperation between the Swedish Radiation Protection Institute, the Swedish Rescue Service, and the Estonian Radiation Protection Centre.
