Today, the completion of the hazardous waste management project initiated in 1993 and co-financed by Danish assistance is discussed at the meeting held in the Ministry of the Environment. The project laid the basis for establishing a hazardous waste management system for the whole of Estonia.

According to Ms. Kai Helm, Coordinator of Estonian-Danish Cooperation Programme at the Estonian Ministry of the Environment, DANCEE (The Danish Cooperation for Environment in Eastern Europe) has provided approximately 30 million Estonian kroon (equivalent to nearly 2 million EUR) within ten years for the development of the hazardous waste management system.

Of the larger objects, the construction of the Vaivara tailing for final disposal of hazardous waste, the procurement of equipment for the attached laboratory, and the establishment of the Tallinn hazardous waste collection centre have been supported by Danish assistance. In addition to the construction of facilities, Denmark has supported the development of relevant legal acts, the performing of studies concerning the situation related to hazardous waste generation and management in Estonia, and the training of specialists of the Ministry of the Environment as well as of companies dealing with hazardous waste.

Today’s meeting of representatives of the DANCEE as well as of the Estonian Ministry of the Environment will give assessment to the results of the ten years’ project.
