Mr. Villu Reiljan, Minister of the Environment, and Mr. Jan Owren, Executive Director of Kunda Nordic Cement Ltd. today signed a voluntary agreement, according to which Kunda Nordic Cement Ltd.will increase the substitution of fossil fuels - oil shale and coal - with alternative waste fuel.

In accordance with the agreement, Kunda Nordic Cement will use available technical and organizational measures for reducing waste generation. The enterprise will start using waste - especially used oils and bilge oils from the vessels - as secondary raw material, and will utilize the hazardous waste generated in the Viru Keemia Grupp (Viru Chemistry Group of enterprises) - semi-coke and fusses (waste from oil shale pitch). Thus, the enterprise will partially substitute fossil fuels with alternative fuels.

According to Minister Villu Reiljan, the activity of Kunda Nordic Cement Ltd. in the area of environmental protection has been impressive. "The grey cement town has become green. With the signing of this agreement, a new positive phase of development will be started in Kunda - we wish you success in these efforts," said Mr. Reiljan.

According to Mr. Owren, Kunda Nordic Cement is willing to continue its environmental activities as this is of importance both for the inhabitants of Kunda and for the clients of the enterprise.

The voluntary agreement signed today was already the second of its kind between the Ministry of the Environment and Kunda Nordic Cement Ltd. The first one was signed in October, 1999, and its main focus lay on atmospheric air protection. In recent years, the enterprise has made considerable investments in this area, consequently the issue of atmospheric air protection has lost its topicality. With the signing of the new agreement more attention will be focsed on waste management.
