Efficiency of interdepartmental cooperation against illegal logging will be improved

With participation of Mr. Villu Reiljan - Minister of the Environment, Mr. Margus Leivo - Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr. Harry Tuul - Director-General of Estonian Police, Mr. Jüri Pikma - Prosecutor General, Mr. Ain Purga - Director-General of the Environmental Inspectorate, and Mr. Priit Kama - Vice Chancellor of the Ministry of Justice, a roundtable meeting was held in the Ministry of the Environment today for discussing ways of improving fight against violations of forestry legislation and timber thefts.
According to Minister Villu Reiljan, it was agreed at the roundtable that the legal basis is nearly sufficient for enabling improvements while interdepartmental cooperation needs considerable improvement.
"The objective is to influence and control the processes much more intensively than has been the case to date. The different departments are ready for improving cooperation," said Mr. Reiljan.
It was decided at the meeting that the Environmental Inspectorate will invite representatives of the competent authorities to a meeting next week, and progress of the steps made will be discussed at monthly meetings to be held at the higher level.
In the future, representatives of the Ministry of Finance and the Taxation Department will also be involved in the discussion.
