Fishing for river trout prohibited in the Järvamaa county in 2003

According to Regulation of the Minister of the Environment, fishing for river trout is prohibited within the Järvamaa County in 2003. The prohibition is due to decrease in the number of breeding fish and worsening of the state of their breeding sites caused by the dry last summer and low water level, and the resulting additional pressure on the fish stock.

The proposal for such a decision was made by Wildlife Estonia which has investigated the state of the Järvamaa water bodies within the framework of a NATURA 2000 implementation project.

According to Mr. Enno Kobakene, Chief Specialist of the Fish Resources Department, there is no intention to establish so severe restrictions elsewhere in Estonia. "In the summer, there is a probability that some restrictions to crayfish catching might be established. It all depends on how water bodies have survived the low water winter season and on the proposal to be made by the scientists," said Mr. Kobakene.
