The Estonian Meteorology and Hydrology Institute (EMHI) will organize a conference "Our Climate in the Future" to be held on Monday, March 24, at 11 a.m. in the EMHI (Rävala 8, Tallinn).
The keynote presentation at the conference will be made by Mr. Ken Davidson, Director of the Global Climate Programme of the International Meteorology Organization, who will present the latest data on the future of global climate.
The presentation "Climate and Agriculture" will be made by Mr. Mati Koppel, Director of the Jõgeva Plant Breeding Institute . According to Mr. Koppel, in the last two relatively mild winters that have been favourable for the wintering of plants, the area of growing winter rye has increased and farmers have started taking more interest in the relatively frost-sensitive species such as winter rape and winter barley.
"In Lithuania, not far from us, the growing of soya beans has been started in the last years - although this crop does not originate from this region at all. No totally new crops have as yet been grown in Estonia; our climate has not changed that drastically so far", said Mr. Koppel.
In addition to the topics mentioned above, problems caused by climate to buildings will be discussed as well as the possibilities for climatic zoning of Estonia.
The conference will mark the Global Meteorology Day that is celebrated annually on March 23.
At 1 p.m. the journalists will be welcome at a press conference held at the main hall of the venue (Rävala 8).
