Largest share of environmental investment centre support for water protection projects

On Thursday,  January 16, the Board of the Environmental Investment Centre (KIK) approved the majority of the Centre’s programmes for 2003 with a total volume of 235.7 million Estonian kroon (equivalent to approximately 15 million EUR).

According to mr. Heiko Põdersalu, Programme Manager of the Environmental Investment Centre, the largest share of financing - 117.8 mln kroon (EEK) - is foreseen for water protection projects.

Priorities of the Water Protection Programme include the 17 Municipalities Water Project which will receive over 56 mln EEK for funding, and EU ISPA cofinanced project for reconstruction of the Narva Waste Water Treatment Plant which will receive KIK cofinancing in the amount of 8 mln EEK. The rest of the sum will be used for financing drinking water supply and waste water treatment projects of relatively smaller scale. In addition to those, 10.4 mln EEK will be used for remediation of past pollution sites.

The second largest programme within 2003 is Waste Management Programme which will receive 47.3 mln EEK from KIK. One of the largest single projects aims at the construction of the intermediate cover and works at boundaries of the Sillamäe radioactive waste tailing which will be supported with slightly over 7 mln EEK. 2 mln EEK will be provided for preparation of ISPA projects in the waste sector. Over 11 mln EEK in total will be used within 2003 for closing of former waste dumping sites.

In total, the Board decided on the distribution of funding among the ten KIK programmes. The overall volume of the Fisheries Programme within 2003 will be nearly 17 mln EEK, the Nature Protection Programme will receive 14 mln EEK, the Environmental Awareness Promotion Programme - nearly 11 mln EEK, the Forestry Programme - slightly over 10 mln EEK, the Air Protection Programme - 8.3 mln EEK, the Mineral Resources Programme - 3.7 mln EEK, the Hunting Management Programme - 3.3 mln EEK, and the Technical Facilities Programme - 1.9 mln EEK.

The Environmental Investment Centre (KIK) is a foundation established within the scope of authority of the Ministry of Finance focused on the financing of environmental projects. Its main resource are revenues channelled into the state budget from the use of environmental resources.
