On April 25, at 9 a.m., representatives of the European Environmental Agency (EEA) will have a meeting with officials and experts of Estonian institutions who are dealing with the collection, processing and use of data related to waste and waste management.

The aim of the visit of representatives of the EEA Waste and Material Flows Topic Centre is collection of data for the chapter on waste of the European State of the Environment report.

At the meeting, representatives of Estonia will give an overview of the waste-related issues in our country, focussing on data collection and statistics (e.g. which types of data and information are collected in Estonia).

The Estonian Environmental Information Centre (EEIC) is responsible for information collection related to the types/categories of waste generated in Estonia.

According to the EEIC, 11.6 million tons of waste were generated in Estonia in 2001including nearly 6 million tons of hazardous waste.

Estonia became member of the EEA in 2001. From 2003 on, Estonia will have the obligation to submit data concerning the state of atmospheric air, water, biological diversity, and waste.

On the basis of the data submitted, the EEA will assess the performing of obligations related to international conventions by the EU candidate countries, as well as assess whether these states will be prepared to join the European Union within the planned timeframe.
