The Ministry of the Environment is literally the most environmental ministry in Estonia. The Constitution of the Republic of Estonia states that the natural wealth and resources of Estonia are national riches which shall be used economically. The function of the Ministry of the Environment is to establish prerequisites and conditions, which ensure a natural environment rich in species and a clean living environment both for our generation and the future generations as well as guarantee economical use of natural resources.

Hence, the activities of the Ministry of the Environment focus on the utilisation of natural resources and environmental protection, balanced development of economic and social spheres, ensuring a well-functioning system necessary for the achievement thereof as well as the purposeful and well-considered use of resources allocated to environmental protection.

 

 

The area of government of the Ministry of the Environment includes:     

the management of national environmental and nature protection,

* the performance of tasks relating to land and databases containing spatial data,
*
the management of the use, protection, recycling and registration of natural resources,
*
the radiation protection,
*
the environmental supervision,
*
the management of meteorological observation, nature and marine research, geological, cartographic and geodetic operations,
*
the maintenance of the environmental register and the land cadastre,
*
the management of the use of external funds of environmental protection and the preparation of corresponding strategic documents and draft legislation.

 In other words, the task of the Ministry of the Environment is to organise and coordinate environmental policy.

The mission of the Ministry of the Environment is to create such preconditions and conditions for Estonia’s development that would guarantee the preservation of our natural biodiversity and clean environment and ensure that natural resources are used economically. According to the vision of the Ministry, an integrated system of environmental protection covering the entire country should be developed so as to ensure the preservation of our clean environment and sustainable use of natural resources.
