The Environmental Inspectorate Still Determining the Causes of Pollution
|
|
Today,
laboratory results were obtained concerning the samples taken from
two pollution sites.
The analysis of the samples taken from the
Alliklepa beach in Harjumaa on 28 January and the southern port of
Paldiski on 29 January reveals that the pollution consists of a mix
of fuels and oils with similar composition, i.e. the residues of oil
products.
The
Environmental Inspectorate has modelled the possible direction of
pollution movement on the sea and gathered information on vessels
that have passed through the pollution area.
According
to the Estonian Maritime Administration, on 26 and 27 January more
than 100 vessels passed through the area where the pollution was
discovered. From among these vessels the more probable polluters have
to be selected and reference material has to be obtained for
comparison with the pollution samples.
The
Environmental Inspectorate has instituted criminal proceedings in
connection with this pollution case.
In order to find out the
causes of pollution and determine other circumstances an
investigation team has been formed, lead by Ms Tiia Kaar, Head of the
Harju Department.
The
investigation team cooperates and exchanges information with the
Estonian Rescue Board and the Border Guard of Estonia. As this is a
very complicated case, we have also consulted the representative of
the Prosecutor’s Office.
In
addition, the Environmental Inspectorate is currently assessing the
extent of the environmental damage caused by the pollution.
