Further eight ministries will start using electric cars

Today, at the Government’s sitting, a draft was approved which allows to use electric cars in addition to the Ministry of Social Affairs also for public service remit in other ministries’ area of government.

“Ministries and state offices’ interest and wish to start using electric cars were remarkably larger than our possibility to provide the cars at the moment. Altogether 133 electric cars were applied and with the Government’s current decision 75 electric cars will be allocated to ministries and offices,” commented the Minister of the Environment Keit Pentus.  

The Ministry of the Environment has entered into an exchange agreement with Mitsubishi Corporation concerning the trading of emission credits, with which Estonia received 507 electric cars with the aim of increasing the share of environmentally friendly and economic vehicles in transport sector. Social workers have been allocated 432 electric cars, other ministries 75 cars for more efficient organising of work and public services remit.  

The distribution of electric cars among ministries’ area of government:
Ministry of Social Affairs 438 (including social workers’ cars), Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications 7, Ministry of Agriculture 3, Ministry of Defence 7, Ministry of Finance 5, Ministry of Justice 6, Ministry of Internal Affairs 31, Ministry of the Environment 6, Ministry of Education and Research 4.
 
The area of government of the Ministry of the Environment will receive altogether 6 electric cars. Four of these will be allocated to the Environmental Board, the controllers of environmental permits’ observance and environmental education specialists. The Estonian Land Board will implement electric cars for the discharge of functions related to land and space databases. One car will remain to the Ministry of the Environment’s use.
 
Police and Border Guard Board, belonging to the area of government of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, will receive 19 electric cars. These will be utilized above all by criminal police officers and experts, whose work does not require the use of emergency vehicles but, for instance, inspection of several scenes of accident.
 
In the area of government of the Ministry of Education and Research, electric cars will be utilized mostly by child care institutions for students with special needs. Officials will use the cars for checking the study process of children receiving home education and for taking them to medical treatment or clinical investigation.
 
The Prison’s Department of the Ministry of Justice will take electric cars into use to improve the transport possibilities of probation supervisors. Probation supervisors will start using the vehicles in their daily work in order to visit persons under curatorship at their homes. The Prison’s Department will receive altogether 6 electric vehicles, of which the probation supervisors of Tallinn Prison will be allocated 3, the supervisors of Tartu Prison 2 and Viru Prison one electric car.
 
Estonian Tax and Customs Board (ETCB), belonging to the area of government of the Ministry of Finance, wished to get 5 electric cars, which are meant above all for driving to the inspection of sites, carrying out checks etc. To Tallinn, ETCB has planned 2 cars, Tartu 1, Pärnu 1 and to Jõhvi 1 car.
