Pollen’s amount in the air can be observed on the web

In the time of
blooming trees and plants, outdoor air contains more pollen than usual, which
could cause discomfort to sensitive people. On air surveillance web, one can
watch every day the level of pollen in five settlements: Tallinn, Tartu,
Kuressaare, Pärnu and Jõhvi.
With the support of
Environmental Investment Centre, Estonian Environmental Research Centre (EKUK) in liaison with ASBL Estonian Allergy Federation began last year a pilot project, in the course of which the concentration of pollen was measured in Tallinn air. By today, the project includes in addition four towns where pollen monitoring occurs. The results are measured every day and they are available for everyone on EKUK air surveillance web.
“We have received positive feedback to the project; pollen information is very important to many people — travel plans are even made based on it,” commented EKUK environmental chemistry specialist Epp Volkov.
It is important for asthmatic and allergic people to prevent discomfort-causing factors. Daily data on pollen concentration in the outdoor air are important information to allergic people.
Pollen is an allergen found in the outdoor air, which penetrates with the inhaled air into bronchus and causes among pollen-sensitive people allergic discomforts, such as asthma and hay fever. From spring to autumn, in the time of the blooming of trees and plants, the concentrations of different pollen are high in the air.
