According to Keit Pentus,
Minister of the Environment, approximately 130 million euro will be invested to
maintenance and improvement of the environmental condition in Ida-Viru County
in five years (2010 to 2014).
About 40 million euro will be allocated to neutralisation of semicoke and ash
heaps in Ida-Viru County. “Ida-Viru County is
rich in mineral resources; however, this is partly the reason why the
environment needs help in fighting the negative effects of mining and
remediating the environmental damage. For instance, the semicoke hills in
Kohtla-Järve and Kiviõli that will be put out of use have been polluting the
local air for many years and endangered groundwater and surface water,” Keit
Pentus, Minister of the Environment explained. “Now the air there will be cleaner.”
The disposal site for oil shale ash of Ahtme thermal power station, as well as
the non-complying Sillamäe non-hazardous waste disposal site will also be
closed.
The most sizeable investments into water economy (a total of about 60 million
euro) in the period between 2010 and 2014 will be directed to construction of
modern water system in Kohtla-Järve and Narva. The works aimed to ensure clean
water and proper sewage are carried out in several other settlements, such as
Sillamäe, Narva-Jõesuu, Aseri, Olgina and Kiviõli. A total of approximately
88.6 million euro will be provided by the Cohesion Fund and the environmental
programme of the Environmental Investment Centre for development of the water
economy.
The summary of the plan of the Ministry of the Environment in Ida-Viru County
has been prepared as part of the review of the Ida-Viru County Development Plan
for 2010-2014.
