Keit Pentus, the Minister of the Environment, introduced the unique electric cars project of Estonia on her meeting with the Finnish EU Affairs Committee today.

“Estonia is extremely open to innovations in the field of environment and is constantly looking for opportunities how to make the living environment that impacts people more comfortable and friendlier,” said the Minister. “The uniqueness of Estonia’s e-car project lies mostly in the fact that a charging network covering the entire country will be built. This will make driving e-cars more comfortable not only within a city or a municipality but also when passing longer distances.”

According to the Minister of the Environment, Estonia is interested in the wider use of e-cars also because it will reduce traffic noise and exhaust gases emitted from traffic. “If the majority of cars on our streets today were noise-free, we would have a much more stress-free and comfortable urban environment. The air would be cleaner, too.”

Keit Pentus also told the Finnish MPs of other projects to be launched in Estonia in order to ensure a more economic use of our natural resources. The topics of acquisition of modern buses, bringing modern trams to Tallinn, renovation of heating lines and ensuring heat retention in residential buildings were discussed. “I hope that we can extend the heat retention programme also to private houses in the nearest future. There are many private houses in Estonia that were built decades ago and that let the wind through as old and shabby clothes. It would be reasonable to have support for the insulation and energy economisation of these buildings on equal terms as those of apartment buildings.”
