Today, on December 19,
the Keila water management project will be completed with a festive ceremony.
The total cost of this project, co-funded by the Cohesion Fund, was 4.3 million
euros and as a result, all residents of the town of Keila have clean drinking
water and a possibility to join a modern sewerage network.
According to Harry Liiv, Deputy Secretary General of the Ministry of the
Environment, the Keila water management
project is the second project that has been completed under the measure
Development of Water Management Infrastructure. “It is remarkable that after
implementation of the project, Keila’s densely populated areas are completely
covered by a public water supply and sewerage system and its drinking water and
treated wastewater are fully in compliance with the requirements. The
obligations taken by Estonia under the European Union’s Drinking Water and Urban
Waste Water Directives have been fulfilled in this town,” Liiv added.
In the framework of this project, a total of 8.4 km of water pipes, 8.9 km of
sewerage pipes and 2.1 km of rain water pipes were built and
reconstructed. Two 500 mŗ drinking
water reservoirs were reconstructed, one multistage pump room was built and
four reconstructed, one bore well pump room constructed, and two wastewater
pump rooms built and eight reconstructed. In addition, a mud treatment system
based on drum composting was built, to be used for producing high-quality
compost soil from the residual mud of wastewater.
The Keila water management project started in 2008 and its total cost was 4.3
million euros. The project was funded by nearly 3 million euros (70.7% of the
total sum) from the EU Cohesion Fund, and the rest was funded by AS Keila
Vesi and the town of Keila.
