Emajõgi river meanders and oxbow lakes accessible again
|
|
Under the lead of the Estonian Environment Information Centre, works
were completed on opening the mouths of Emajõgi river meanders and oxbow lakes
and at the Kärevere boat canal.
Mouths of several river meanders have been
regularly dredged by people over a long period of time. Larger dredging works
in Estonia were completed in 1959, also in the 1960s when canals were dug to
rivers from 28 larger meadow lakes.
The main aim of this project was to restore
spawning areas for fish. For that purpose, 8 meanders and oxbow lakes on the
River Emajõgi and the Kärevere boat channel were cleaned. Mouths were dredged,
trees and bushes removed where necessary, and the surroundings maintained. The
works were performed both on floating devices and from the riverbanks.
The works were completed sooner than expected
and will be delivered today, on December 9. The contractual cost of the project
was 175,279 euros and it was funded by the European Union Cohesion Fund under
the measure developed by the Minister of the Environment, Improvement of the
Condition of Watercourses.
