Minister of the Environment Keit Pentus participated this week in the European Union’s Environment Council in Luxembourg, where a common position was developed for the UN Climate Conference taking place at the end of the year.

“How to encourage the greater entry into service of job creating and natural resources conserving technological solutions – these topics are on the table not only in Estonia but in other European Union Member States. These topics will be partially focused on in December at the Climate Conference,” explained Minister of the Environment Keit Pentus.

According to the Minister of the Environment, the countries of the European Union are ahead of many other countries when it comes to environmental awareness. We continue to monitor more precisely how we grow our economy, so that natural resources are not wasted, but are instead used economically and efficiently,” added the Minister.

“Concerns relating to the environment and climate do not take into consideration the borders of countries, which is why it is important that similar principles and objectives would be adopted not only in the European Union, but by as many countries of the world as possible.” She explained that at the next UN Climate Conference, the main topic is how, following the end of the Kyoto protocol period, to reach a new consensus on the goals for the reduction in the emission of greenhouse gasses. “Readiness to reduce pollution differs greatly from country to country outside of the European Union. The wish of the European Union is in regards to a post-Kyoto to move forward with negotiations at the next climate meeting to find an agreement to cover all countries.

Taking place from 28 November to 9 December, in Durban, in the Republic of South Africa, is the 17th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 17) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the 7th session of the Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties (CMP 7) to the Kyoto Protocol.
