On 29 September, the Government approved a regulation which prescribes a fee of EUR 304.47 for using an open sea trap to catch eels on Lake Kuremaa.

“The money collected from the catching of eels will go to restocking eels in Estonia’s waters. So that in five years our fishermen will be able to catch those same eels for which they paid a fishing fee today,” explained Minister of the Environment Keit Pentus.

At the proposal of scientists from the Estonian University of Life Sciences Institute of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Centre for Limnology, eels may be caught on Lake Kuremaa in 2011 using three open sea traps.

Pursuant to the Environmental Charges Act, for internal water bodies where the state invests in the restocking of the eel resources, the fishing charge is determined based on the fishing gear used to fish the eels, taking into consideration all average costs related to restocking incurred between the fifth and tenth preceding years and this fee shall be divided among all permitted eel fishing gear.

Since fishing with an open water weir on Lake Kuremaa is permitted this year, then the regulation shall establish a fee for the use of this fishing gear, which is EUR 304.47 for one piece of fishing gear. The amount of the fee is the same as for the fyke net permitted for use on this lake.
