On Thursday, 18 August, the Government of the Republic approved the amendment of the regulation, pursuant to which the quota for pike-perch will increase by 100 tonnes in 2011 on Lakes Peipus, Lämmijärv and Pskov In place of the current 600 tonnes, 700 tonnes of pike-perch may now by caught.

“It was possible to increase the pike-perch fishing quota for Estonian fishermen due to the fact that fish resources are in a good state. Also, it would not have been possible to change the quota without an agreement with Russia: cooperation between the two countries involving Lake Peipus has continuously improved. Together, we have been able to significantly reduce the burden falling on the lake and stabilise the condition of Lake Peipus,” stated Minister of the Environment Keit Pentus. She added that by taking advantage of the new fishing quota, fisherman will have the opportunity to increase their incomes.

The amendment is being made as a result of the decision of the 32nd session of the Estonian-Russian Intergovernmental Fisheries Commission for Lake Peipus and the recommendations of experts. The amendment is necessary, in order to allow Estonian fishermen to extend the fishing season. As at the end of June of this year, Estonia had already used approximately 60% of the pike-perch quota and according to predictions, the quota would have only lasted until beginning of September.

If Estonian fishermen caught 1205 tonnes of perch, 507 tonnes of perch, 46 tonnes of pike and 434 tonnes of bream in 2010, on Lakes Peipus, Lämmijärv and Pskov, then in accordance with the international agreement, this year Estonian fishermen are permitted to catch 1744 tonnes of perch, 700 tonnes of pike-perch, 110 tonnes of pike and 600 tonnes of bream.
