Estonian nature conservation celebrates its 100th anniversary 03.02.2010 European nature conservation in its traditional meaning was born at the beginning of 20th century, when an obligation to preserve and keep for future generations rare species and remarkable natural features – such as a jet, a tree growing in a sacred grove, an erratic boulder or a white-tailed eagle – was acknowledged. One started to place under protection impressive natural memorials and to establish the first nature conservation areas.

2010 is the International Year of Biodiversity 17.02.2010 The United Nations declared 2010 to be the International Year of Biodiversity to raise awareness of the importance of biological diversity. Throughout the year countless international and local initiatives will be organised, focusing mostly on nature and safeguarding the variety of life on earth.

Minister of the Environment was authorized to sell Estonian greenhouse gas emissions 8.03.2010 The Government of Estonia authorised Jaanus Tamkivi, Minister of the Environment, to enter into contract to sell unused greenhouse gas emission assigned amount units to the Republic of Austria.

Baltic Ministers of the Environment meet in Latvia 03.06.2010 From 3 to 4 June, Jaanus Tamkivi, Minister of the Environment, attends the meeting of the Baltic Council of Ministers (BCM) in Dagda, Latvia, to discuss environmental issues with his Latvian and Lithuanian colleagues.

Government to invest revenue from sales of emission credits in development of wind energy and public transport 29.07.2010 At its session today, the Government of the Republic approved draft sale and purchase agreements for Estonia’s unused pollution quota AAUs (Assigned Amount Units), which are being entered into with the Kingdom of Spain and the Japanese bank Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC). With the entry into force of these transactions the government will have sold AAUs to the value of one billion kroons in 2010, which is twice as much as planned in the annual budget.

Estonian Government approves the sale of AAUs to the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg 05.08.2010 At its session today (August 5, 2010) the Government of the Republic approved the sale of Estonia’s unused emission rights or Assigned Amount Units (AAUs) to the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. Under a Green Investment Scheme (GIS), the proceeds totaling 30 mil EUR will be invested into energy efficiency improvement of apartment houses.

Estonian marine scientists investigate the impact of the gas pipeline on the Gulf of Finland 19.08.2010 The Ministry of the Environment commissioned additional research in the Gulf of Finland to obtain an objective overview of the impact of the Nord Stream gas pipeline on the Estonian marine environment.

Additional surveys planned on the Nabala karst area 19.08.2010 A working group of the representatives of rural municipalities of the Nabala region and of the Ministry of the Environment met at the Ministry to discuss the need for additional surveys to obtain a clearer picture of the Nabala deposits.

Proceeds from the sales of AAUs to Japanese conglomerates will be invested into energy efficiency of public buildings 23.09.2010 At today’s cabinet meeting, the Government approved the sales of 5,8 million AAUs to Japanese conglomerates Marubeni, Sumitomo and Mitsubishi, of which close to 3 million AAUs went to Marubeni.

Proceeds from the sales of AAUs to Marubeni Corporation will be invested into 02.12.2010 At today’s cabinet meeting, the Government approved the sales of about 3 million AAUs to Marubeni Corporation.

Rhinoceros Murray stands up for its fellow specimen 27.12.2010

The body of Murray, the rhinoceros who lived a long life in the Tallinn Zoo is about to receive the finishing touch – the skin has been mounted on the model and is currently drying. The whole procedure has followed its due course. When completed the stuffed animal will be exposed to the public in the Estonian Museum of Natural History hopefully in early spring.
