On the 29
th meeting of the Estonian-Russian intergovernmental commission on fishing and questions of conservation and use of fishery resources of lakes Peipus, Lämmijärv and Pskov that took place on 23-27 November in Tartu fishing levels with regard to various species were agreed.
During the meeting the parties have also exchanged information regarding the results of fishing for the first 10 months of 2009, the status of fishery resources, the work on preservation of fishery resources and the joint scientific research.
In comparison with this year, next year fishing of perch will increase by 150 tons and reach the total of 1000 tons . Fishing quota of pike will also increase by 10 tons and reach the total on 95 tons. The most significant decrease Estonia will experience is related to the zander fishing quota – it will decrease by 100 tons to the total level of 500 tons. Such a decrease is explained primarily by unsatisfactory state of respective fishery resources.
Fishing of bream will decrease in Estonia in the next year by 60 tons; the total quota is set on the level of 510 tons. The decrease is explained by the exchange of quotas that was agreed already this summer. To avoid overfishing of perch quota in 2009, Estonia arranged for an exchange with Russia. For 2010 Estonia received a quota for 100 tons of perch and Russia received two quotas – for 90 tons of bream and 20 tons of roach respectively. In comparison with this year, the total quota for roach fishing will remain the same the next year (330 tons). Vendace and smelt fishing is allowed only for research purposes.
The fishing commission has also approved the Fishing Procedure for the first half of the next year. According to it a ban on net fishing will be imposed on lakes Peipus, Lämmijärv and Pskov since 20 April until 1 September. Trap net fishing is prohibited during the ice-free period. It is allowed to fish for zander the length of which in less than 35 cm (measured from the top of head (with mouth closed) to the middle of tail fin) or less than 40 cm (measured from the top of head (with mouth closed) to the end of tail fin). Fishing for roach with fine-meshed nets (60-80 mm) is allowed in the coastal zone since 15 March until 5 May.
A fishing regime for lakes Peipus, Lämmijärv and Pskov for the second half of 2010 will be agreed in June 2010 during bilateral consultations that are to take place in Russia.
