Private forest owners can use support in millions

Already for the second year, forest owners receive support for private forest land located in Natura 2000 area through Private Forest Centre; in 2009, the divided sum of money will reach 82 million kroons. Counted together with other support from the EU, the private forest owners can apply for a total of more than 100 million kroons. The total amount of other European Union forestry support implemented through the Private Forest Center is 31.4 million kroons this year.

In 2008, 1900 applications were submitted in all, 1108 of which have been satisfied in the total amount of 13.5 million kroons. Almost 30 million kroons of support was applied for 28.000 ha of forest land in limited and special management zones.

"At least a half of private forest owners did not submit an application," Andres Talijärv, Deputy Secretary General of the Ministry of the Environment, noted. "Although this support is meant for everyone whose forest is located in the Natura area and this money would help maintain forests containing values in terms of nature conservation, but also compensating for the loss of income due to restrictions.”

Currently, the biggest amount of support allocated to one single applicant has been 193.052 kroons. The average sum of support is 12.255 kroons.

The Private Forest Centre also distributes national forestry support to private forest owners. The most important and substantial of these are support for the preparation of forest management plans and reforestation support. This year, 11 and 13.7 million kroons have been allocated for these respectively.
