The Government of the Republic approved the Investment Plan for enhancing environmental supervision prepared by the Ministry of the Environment, on the basis of which four Environmental Inspectorate projects receive support from the European Regional Development Fund (ERF).
The total value of the Investment Plan "Development of Environmental Supervision" projects is 64,907,600 kroons and this will be used to support the reconstruction of the Environmental Inspectorate Viljandi Bureau Kivilõppe building and the Southern region Mustvee Bureau, for procuring environmental supervision work and technical equipment and equipment necessary for the development and implementation of information technology.
According to the Minister of the Environment Jaanus Tamkivi, enhancing the performance of the Environmental Inspectorate is very important. "Thanks to these projects, the efficiency of supervision will increase significantly, which, in turn, will help prevent potential environmental offences and detect them faster. Information technology development will allow a faster information acquisition and transmission process, to decrease the number of documents printed on paper, as well as enhancement of operability of recording and processing offences," Tamkivi noted.
100 million kroons have been allocated to the sub-field of environmental supervision development in the framework of the Operational Programme for the Development of the Living Environment. Thus, there are some finances left to cover future environmental supervision needs, for the use of which the Ministry of the Environment will draw up a supplementary investment plan no later than by the end of 2010.
